B.C. charges property transfer tax: 1% on the first $200,000, 2% to $2 million, 3% above $2 million, plus a further 2% on residential value over $3 million. First-time buyers pay no tax on the first $500,000 when the home is worth $835,000 or less (partial exemption up to $860,000).
